Internet Privacy

Better Business Bureau Online

The Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB) has developed a self-regulatory online privacy program through its subsidiary BBBOnLine. The BBBOnLine privacy self-regulation program takes advantage of the significant expertise CBBB wields in dispute resolution and self-regulation.

The BBBOnLine privacy program features verification, monitoring and review, consumer dispute resolution, a compliance seal, enforcement mechanisms, and an educational component. Consumers will find the BBBOnLine privacy program a user-friendly tool to help consumer comfort on the Net. Businesses will find the program to be reasonably priced and a simple, one-stop, non-intrusive way to demonstrate compliance with credible online privacy principles.

The mission of BBBOnLine is to promote trust and confidence on the Internet by promoting ethical online business practices. This online program regulates Internet privacy standard setting, verification, monitoring, and consumer-dispute resolution components. The BBBOnLine Privacy Program is managed by the Council of Better Business Bureaus, an organization with expertise and experience in conducting successful national self-regulation programs, and uses guidelines and requirements outlined by the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce.  Information about this program is available at http://www.bbbonline.org.

The BBB recently proposed that the same business practices that govern traditional business, such as those pertaining to truthful disclosure, lending and credit policies, and customer privacy, be applicable to Internet business as well.  The BBB issued a December 30 deadline for e-tailers, standard retailers, trade associations, government agencies, and the public to comment on the proposed Code of Online Business Practices via an easy-to-use e-mail response system.
