The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is the leading agency, within the US, in developing laws to regulate privacy standards.  The FTC’s Web site contains educational materials on consumer privacy and many other useful links to:

The FTC monitors many Internet sites and brings enforcement actions when it’s appropriate.  Recently GeoCities (one of the most popular Internet Web sites) has agreed to settle FTC charges for collecting personal information from children and adults under misrepresentation.  The Web site has not disclosed to its consumers what information is being collected, for what purposes, and to whom it will be disclosed.
