Georgetown Internet Privacy Policy Survey

The Georgetown survey was conducted for the Federal Trade Commission and was initiated and funded by the private sector (Executive Summary).  The report was prepared by the University’s research group in 1999.  Results provide information on the kinds of personal information that Web sites collect from consumers and whether or not the companies have posted privacy notices online.

According to the study, 98% of the top 100 Web sites collected at least one type of personal information, and 93% of Web sites have posted at least one type of disclosure.  Disclosures include a description of a site’s practices, and a privacy policy notice, or an information practice statement.
